Stone Base Calculator for Accurate Base Material Estimates
Calculate the amount of compacted stone base, crushed aggregate, crusher run, or road base needed for patios, walkways, driveways, paths, and other hardscape projects.
To use the Stone Base Calculator, first select the shape of the area you are preparing. For a rectangular patio, driveway, or walkway, enter the length and width. For a circular area, enter the diameter. For a triangular area, enter the base and height. Measurements can be entered in feet, inches, yards, meters, or centimeters.
Next, enter the compacted base thickness. A 4-inch stone base is a common starting point for patios and walkways, while driveways and areas exposed to heavier loads can require a deeper aggregate base depending on soil conditions, drainage, climate, traffic, and the finished surface.
The calculator uses the area and compacted depth to determine the required stone base volume. A waste and compaction allowance can then be added to account for material loss, settling, grading, handling, and the fact that aggregate is compacted during installation. The calculator uses the selected material's typical density to estimate the total weight of crushed stone.
Results are provided in US tons, metric tonnes, kilograms, pounds, cubic yards, cubic feet, cubic meters, square feet, and square meters. You can optionally enter a material price per US ton, metric tonne, cubic yard, cubic meter, cubic foot, or square foot to estimate the project material cost.
Stone Base Calculator
Size the compacted base layer under your patio, path or driveway.
Typical base depth: patios & walkways 4 in, driveways 8–12 in over soft ground.
Fill in the area and press Calculate to see your base estimate.
How the Stone Base Calculator Works
The Stone Base Calculator calculates the surface area from your selected shape, multiplies that area by the compacted base depth, and adds the specified waste or compaction allowance. The resulting volume is converted using the selected material density to estimate stone base weight in US tons, metric tonnes, kilograms, and pounds, while the same volume is shown in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters.
Stone Base Calculator Formula
The calculator uses different area formulas for rectangular, circular, and triangular surfaces before calculating the required aggregate base volume and material weight.
Rectangle Area
Use the length and width of rectangular patios, driveways, paths, slabs, or other square and rectangular areas.
Circle Area
Use the diameter measured straight across the circular area from one edge to the opposite edge.
Triangle Area
Use the bottom base measurement and the perpendicular height from the base to the opposite point.
Material Weight
The calculator uses the selected aggregate density to estimate the total mass of crusher run, crushed stone, road base, or another base material.
Waste & Compaction
A 20% allowance increases the calculated material quantity by 20% to account for compaction, settling, handling, and waste.
Cost Estimate
Enter a supplier price per ton, tonne, cubic yard, cubic meter, cubic foot, or square foot to calculate an estimated material cost.
Stone Base Calculator Example
The examples below show how to enter measurements for all three area shapes supported by the calculator.
Example Measurements
These sample dimensions demonstrate the inputs used for a stone base, crushed aggregate, or compacted road base estimate.
Rectangular Area
Circular Area
Triangular Area
For a 20 ft × 15 ft rectangular area with a 4-inch compacted base, the surface area is 300 ft². The base depth is approximately 0.333 ft, producing approximately 100 ft³ of compacted base volume before the allowance. With a 20% waste and compaction allowance, the adjusted requirement becomes approximately 120 ft³, or about 4.44 cubic yards. Using a crusher-run density of 135 lb/ft³, the estimated material weight is approximately 8,100 lb, or 4.05 US tons.
Helpful Information Before Calculating Stone Base
Accurate measurements and realistic material assumptions produce a more useful stone base estimate.
Measure the Finished Area
Measure the actual ground area that will receive the aggregate base. For rectangular areas, record the length and width; for circular areas, measure the diameter; for triangular areas, measure the base and perpendicular height.
Use the Compacted Depth
Enter the planned compacted stone base thickness, not simply the loose material depth. A base that finishes at 4 inches after compaction may require more loose aggregate during installation.
Choose the Correct Base Material
Common aggregate base materials include crusher run, crushed stone, quarry process, Class II road base, recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), and dense-grade aggregate. Material density varies by product, source, moisture, gradation, and compaction.
Allow for Compaction and Waste
The calculator includes an adjustable waste and compaction percentage. The allowance accounts for material loss, handling, grading, settling, and aggregate compaction. Your supplier or contractor may recommend a different percentage based on the project.
Check Aggregate Density
Stone base weight depends directly on density. The calculator provides typical density values, but the supplier's stated bulk density is preferable when available because crushed aggregate products can have different weights per cubic foot or cubic meter.
Understand Volume Versus Weight
Ordering stone by cubic yard measures volume, while ordering by US ton or metric tonne measures weight. The correct ordering unit depends on how the aggregate supplier sells the material.
Consider Soil and Drainage Conditions
Required base thickness can depend on soil strength, drainage, frost conditions, traffic loads, climate, surface type, and site preparation. Heavy-use driveways can require substantially more base material than pedestrian walkways.
Confirm the Supplier Quantity
Use the calculator as an estimate for planning and purchasing. Confirm the final stone base quantity, product type, density, delivery quantity, and price with the aggregate supplier before placing an order.
